Nashua Catholic Regional Jr. H.S. Newsletter |
October
2009 |
|
|
|
Dear Parents and Students,
October is here already. Our academic and
extra-curricular activities are in full swing. Our new
Smart Boards - which you have heard so much about- are
being successfully integrated into our curricula and we
hope to continue to provide your children with engaging
and technology rich learning experiences.
October will be a busy month. Your child's first
progress reports will be issued on Oct. 7. Please check
your child's progress and make sure they are on track
and focused on their priorities. Our teachers do their
best to keep open lines of communications with you but
if you have any concerns, please feel free to contact
your child's instructors.
Our Catholic School Prep course for 8th graders begins
this month;if
you plan to send your child to any area Catholic High
School, please be aware of the calendar dates when this
course is offered. further
information regrading the
Catholic Schools prep course is contained in this
newsletter.
We have installed hand sanitizers in every classroom.
We will continue to educate our students about the
importance of frequent hand hygiene in
combatting the spread of the
H1N1 virus. Please reinforce this issue with your child
at home.
We are still counting on your support for our new Fall
Fundraiser. We were treading on unfamiliar and
uncertain territory this year when we decided to scrap
the Nashua Country Fair in favor of this new Fall
event. By the time your read this newsletter, the first
phase of this Fall Fundraiser - i.e., the Calendar
Raffle - will be well on its way with daily
winners being drawn throughout this month. We still
need your help in selling tickets for the $2500 Raffle
(the second phase) to be drawn the night of our "Ball in
the House" concert (the third phase) on October 17. The
Ball In The House Concert is coming up very quickly. A
concert ticket request form was sent out in the
first day packet but may have been misplaced. We will
be sending out the form again and one $2500 raffle
ticket ($10) next week with each student. Some of our
families earned a $2500 Raffle ticket during the
Calendar Raffle sales but requests to buy chances have
been coming into the office. If you would like more to
sell please request them. Thank you for all your help
with the raffles. Hope to see everyone at the concert!
All three schools are depending on the success of this
Fall event so we can maintain, in no small part, the
intergrity of our programs.
With your help and support, this Fall Fundraiser will
become a mainstay event for all three Catholic Schools.
Parents are also reminded that in addition to no school
on October 12 (Columbus Day), there will be no school on
October 23 (Diocesan Formation Day for Catholic School
Teachers).
Please continue to offer your prayers and support as we
strive to give your children the best faith -based,
academic education possible.
God Bless,
Thomas Kelleher

Academic Notes:
News
from the English Department:
As we approach the mid-point of the first quarter of
2009-2010, our students and we are involved in many
challenging projects. 8th grade English students are
working on their formal research papers; 8th grade
literature students at all levels are engaging in the
study of nonfiction literature. Mrs. Barker and Mrs.
Philion have scheduled a
field trip to Mark Twain house in Hartford, Connecticut,
on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, in conjunction with their
study of this great American author. The 8th grade
honors literature classes have been exploring the
development of Jazz - America's music. They have also
been working independently on an African American
project.
The 7th grade English students have been beginning
their vocabulary and grammar study and working on
developing their writing skills; 7th grade literature
students at all levels are reading and discussing
appropriate nonfiction selections. Mrs. Maloney's 7th
grade advanced literature classes have also been working
on an extensive Native American project which will
culminate in classroom powwow celebrations.
Nashua Catholic is registered again this year to
participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We
will be administering the classroom spelling tests
sometime in late October. This test will determine the
classroom representatives who will compete in the school
spelling bee. Further information will be in future
newsletters.
The Writers C lub will
be lead by Mrs. Philion this
year. Students (or parents) who are interested in
participating should contact her at the beginning of the
second quarter. This first quarter is very busy with
sports, high school prep classes, and high school
entrance exams. Meanwhile, keep writing!
Finally, each month we receive flyers from
Scholastic Book clubs. These forms are available from
your child's literature teacher, and they feature some
interesting books for students or parents to purchase,
if they choose. If you wish to participate, have your
child bring home a form, fill it out with your choices,
and send it along with a check made payable to
"Scholastic Book Clubs." Mrs.
Pinsonneault sends in the order each month and
the books are delivered into your child's hands when
they arrive. The bonus points we earn with each order
go toward procuring new paperback books for the use of
our students.
Enjoy the many glories of autumn!
News
from the Math Department:
Our students will once again have the opportunity to
compete in the Catholic Math League competition in all
of our Nashua Catholic math classes. Math competitions
are offered for each grade at a variety of levels. These
exams provide practice in solving word and logic
problems and are a good enhancement to our curriculum.
Last year we had superb results from many of our
students and we look forward to seeing how they fare in
this year's competition. There will be four tests for
each level containing 25 questions each. Each test is
thirty minutes long. Test dates are set for November 4,
December 16, February 3 and March 3 for this year.
Looking forward to much success again as we embark on
this mathematical adventure!
Also, some of our students have "misplaced"
their textbooks already. It is important that you are
certain that your child has written their name in their
texts so, if they are found around the building, we know
which book belongs to which student! We do not have
extra textbooks - please help your child stay "on track"
by ensuring that they have all their supplies. Thanks!
The math department is looking for parent
volunteer(s) to coach the NC
Mathcounts club. Last year we had much success
with this competition as well. Students meet a few times
each month to practice problems after school. Club
members help form the "team" which competes once a year
in the regional competition in Feb/March time frame. Any
parent interested in coaching the team, please contact
Mrs. Parolin at
jparolin@ncrjhs.org .
From the Physical Education Department:
Students are reminded to wear or bring appropriate
footwear if they have a Dress Down day on their Physical
Education day. Sneakers are required. Flats or
slip-ons are not acceptable. Sneakers with laces that
cannot be snugly tightened (ie.
skateboarding shoes) are also not acceptable, as they
tend to come off during vigorous activity.

RECOMMENDATIONS
Our eighth grade students will be soon applying to
the area high schools. Parents must complete the top
portion of the high school recommendation sheets (Math,
English and Language.). Also, please complete the top
portion and sign the release of records. Students should
send these forms to the
office. Do not pass the recommendations out to your
teachers yourself. We will handle that for you. We track
the recommendations and get them to each high school by
their deadline. Please send the forms to Mrs. Campbell
as soon as you can so that all deadlines can be made for
your student. If your student is interested in a public
school, please call their office to have your student
put on their list and obtain their requirements for
admission. Thank you for your help and attention to
this matter.

CLUBS
& ACTIVITIES
NC
STRING ENSEMBLE:
Mrs. Pinsonneault has
organized and participated in an after-school string
ensemble which has played at various school events. If
any violinists, cellists, or violists are interested in
forming a group this year, please stop by Room 406 and
let her know when you might be available.
Prayer and Service Club and The NC Garden
Club :
We are merging these two clubs to form one service
group - name to be determined. This club, advised by
Mrs. Parolin and Mrs.
Kirkwood, will have service projects helping our
community on the school, region and world scope. This
is a spirit and welcoming club. During study hall times,
this group of busy students learns about the care of our
school plants, helps with the displays in the foyer area
and organizes the Hat and Mitten Drive at Christmas
time. Any student wishing to join this club should
submit a written suggestion to Mrs. Kirkwood on a house
plant that would thrive at Nashua Catholic. We are eager
for new members!
As a start, the Prayer and
Service Club has begun their work this year already. The
club members filled and donated a Halloween Theme basket
to Marguerite's Place in Nashua for their annual silent
auction. In addition, many members of the club donated
their time and helped "behind the scenes" the night of
the event to assist board members and staff with a
myriad of odd jobs to assure that the evening would run
smoothly. Many thanks to club members Megan Reilly,
Alison Hoffer, Elizabeth
Rossi, Emily Lennon, Veronica Mack and Stacie Cornell
for the gift of their time. Thanks for representing our
club so well.
Announcing Popcorn/Bake sale First Friday
every month
Staff and students will have an opportunity to purchase
freshly popped popcorn and sweets from the Prayer and
Service Club once each month during lunch. Items will
cost 50 cents each and will be available during both 7th

Catholic School Prep Course
Information
HIGH SCHOOL ENTRANCE EXAM PREP COURSE
Nashua Catholic will be offering a Prep Course for High
School Entrance Exams. This course is a review of
selected concepts in Math and English, and practice
tests are administered in both subject areas. This
will allow students to experience a typical High School
Entrance Exam and become more comfortable with the
format. The students will also learn practical tips on
test taking. Although participation in the preparatory
class does not guarantee admission to any school, it may
be beneficial for some students to review material and
take practice tests.
These classes will be held after school from 3P.M. -
5P.M. on October 13, 15, 26, and 28. There is a short
break for the students at 4P.M. and a light snack will
be provided. The cost is $60 and includes the entrance
exam book that will be used for the course and will be
yours to keep. We are anticipating 100 students to sign
up for the course and have ordered as many books. When
the books are gone, we will allow students to take the
course for $50 but they will be required to purchase a
prep book (ISBN #139780768927863 )
from an outside source.
If you are interested in having your child attend these
classes, fill out the form at the bottom of the page and
return it to school with a check for $60 made payable to
Nashua Catholic. Send the form and check to the office
in an envelope marked "Prep Course" no later than
Wednesday, October 7.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
