DIOCESAN MISSION STATEMENT

We are the Catholic Church of New Hampshire, a portion of God's People rich in our tradition and in our diversity, striving in faith for fullness of life.

In communion with the Bishop of Rome and the Church throughout the world, our mission is to witness to the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit by

Worshiping God in Word and Sacrament,
            Proclaiming and sharing our Faith
Promoting holiness of life through continuing conversion, Serving human      needs, especially those of the poor and the oppressed,
Forming Christian communities on the family, parish and diocesan levels.
Fostering reconciliation and harmony among the people of our diocese,     our state, our nation, and our planet.

Faithful to the constant teachings of the Church, we also pledge to collaborate with all peoples, especially with other Christian Churches and with the Jewish community, as we devote ourselves to being thankful, responsible stewards of God's gracious and bountiful gifts. While we journey in Faith, we anticipate with joy the day when Christ will come again and everything will be complete in God's love.

SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School strives to nurture the whole student: mind, body, and soul.  We foster an environment in which students, teachers, and parents can critically examine today's morals and values in light of the Gospel.  We assist parents in fulfilling their call as the primary teachers of their children.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

As educators in a Catholic school, we enter into the noble ministry of teaching and service, the ministry of Jesus Himself.  We live in a manner that gives concrete expression to both our calling and Christian belief.

We are an educational community that complements the family, and society and also recognizes the need to provide quality education in a rapidly changing world.

SCHOOL HISTORY

In 1973, Catholic schools in Nashua changed their status from parish schools to a regional school system.  When this plan went into effect, NCRJHS opened its doors to educate seventh and eighth grade students in the former St. Louis Grammar School building.  In the fall of 1976, school enrollment was expanded to include a ninth grade program, satisfying the requests of parents.  In the fall of 1992, Nashua Catholic moved to its present location at 6 Bartlett Avenue, occupying the main building of the former Mount St. Mary High School.  The school provided a challenging curriculum, a variety of sports programs, community service opportunities, and fine arts programs.

Since the relocation, many programs have been added, both during and after school.  To enhance the curriculum an arts program was added.  Extra curricular programs were also added to the school culture.  They include an Extended Day Program, a week-long Summer Day Program, a week-long Study Skills Program, summer athletic camps and GOALS (Guided Organization, Assignments, and Learning Skills).  A technology program was established and we now boast a ‘state of the art’ computer lab.

At its inception and for many years thereafter, students at NCRJHS had been educated by religious from the Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of the Holy Cross, Sisters of Notre Dame, Sisters of St. Anne, and Brothers of the Sacred Heart.  Over time, the number of religious decreased.  Currently, there are several Secular Franciscans in the Theology department.

ABSENCE

When a student is absent from school, a parent should notify the office before 9AM.  If the office does not receive a call, an attempt will be made to contact the parent or the parent’s voice mail.

Absence from school or from class is always detrimental to the student.  Appointments, except for emergencies, should be scheduled outside of school time.  In cases when it is not possible to schedule appointments at other times, the student should request schoolwork prior to or immediately after the absence.

Absences from school for PERSONAL reasons should be cleared with the school prior to the absence.  Parents should make sure that students kept out of school for personal reasons do not miss important tests, quizzes, etc., that may adversely affect the student’s academic progress.  In all instances where a student’s absence record is excessive, the school will notify the parents of this concern.  A parental conference will be arranged.

STUDENTS WHO ARE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL OR A SCHEDULED SCHOOL ACTIVITY ARE INELIGIBLE FOR ALL AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, i.e.: sports, clubs, dances, plays, etc!

Regular school attendance is essential and is required of all students.  Students are expected to be in school every day when school is in session.  Time lost from class can adversely affect the student's educational progress.  Students have an obligation to contribute as well as to receive in the context of the classroom setting.  EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM MAY RESULT IN AN ADMINISTRATIVE GRADE OF F.

Parents may request homework if the student is out of school for three or more days.  If the student is going to be out of school for one or two days, the school encourages all students to pick up make-up work when they return to school and are feeling 'up-to-par'!  (The student should be allowed to recuperate during the period of absence rather than attempting to do school work that may require teacher guidance.)

ACCREDITATION

Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School is accredited by the National Association of Schools & Colleges, Inc. (NEAS&C).

ADMISSION POLICIES

“The Catholic school shall observe the entrance requirements of the state and local school district, regarding age (RSA 193:1), inoculations (RSA 200:38) and physicals (RSA 200:32 and 200:33) (Cf. Appendix D) MMR #2 (RSA 301:13 page 23 rule #5, page 25).  “Admission to a Catholic school shall not be determined by race, national origin, or socio-economic background.  Catholic students and siblings of current students are given first preference.”

Students from the Diocese of Manchester elementary schools and siblings of NCRJHS students are admitted readily, given good grades, conduct, and effort.  Students from other elementary or middle schools as well as Diocesan at-risk elementary students must interview with the principal or assistant principal prior to admission.  Acceptance is based on the ability of the student to succeed academically, evident desire of the student to attend NCRJHS, good grades, conduct and effort.

The school reserves the right to dismiss at any time a student who, in its judgment, is undesirable in attitude and general conduct or whose continuation in the school is detrimental to his/herself or to his/her fellow students.  All students begin their admission to NCRJHS under a ninety day probationary period where the students are subject to withdrawal if effort, conduct, or academic achievement does not comply with the standards of the school.

Parents are held to the same standard as students with regard to respect for teachers.  Enrollment of a child in NCRJHS implies a partnership between the school and the parents/guardian.  If the partnership breaks down, parents may be required to withdraw their child from the school.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

After-School Silent Study Hall is conducted on a daily basis from dismissal until 3:30 P.M. and is monitored by our teachers or parent volunteer staff.  This is a quiet place for students to do homework, take tests or read in a quiet, calm environment.  Snacks and drinks are not allowed.

Café is available for students from dismissal to 3:30 P.M. and is monitored by teachers/staff and volunteers.  Snacks are available provided they do not become problematic.

Parents are to pick up their student from the rear cafeteria doors by 3:30 P.M.  At no time are students allowed to congregate or “hang out” outside on school grounds.  If parents are not able to pick up their children at that time, they will be assigned to the Extended Day Program and parents will be charged for a minimum of one hour (see extended day program).  After dismissal all other areas of the school building are OFF LIMITS except those outlined in the After School Programs unless a student has been specifically directed to see a teacher or meet with a coach.  The school will not accept responsibility for students who are not where they are supposed to be after dismissal.

Extended Day Program will be available on a fee basis and school rules will apply.  This program is available to all students from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.  on regular school days.  There is no extended day available on early-release days.  Athletes who stay for late practices and are not supervised by a volunteer parent will be placed in the Extended Day Program and charged the regular per diem rate for Extended Day.

G.O.A.L.S. PROGRAM

The G.O.A.L.S (Guided Organization And Learning Skills) Program is designed to

give students additional, personalized assistance with homework completion, time management and organizational skills.

Students who are identified by parents, teachers or administrators as needing such assistance may attend the GOALS program, by appointment, after school between 3:30-5:30pm.  Each student will have an individualized program that will be set up according to his/her specific needs and instructor schedules.   The fee for the GOALS program is $10/hour or any part of an hour the child is present.

Any student who utilizes this service is required to record all assignments in his or her agenda book, and have the agenda initialed by each subject teacher daily to ensure that assignments have been recorded correctly.  In addition, it is always the STUDENT’S responsibility to complete and turn in all assignments, and to request extra help from individual subject teachers when necessary.

If you are interested in G.O.A.L.S., please contact Mrs. Deb Matson-Champagne at dmatson@ncrjhs.org or call 882-7011.

BOOK BAGS

Bags may be single strap bags worn on the shoulder or backpacks worn over both shoulders.  Rolling book bags are not allowed.  Students are allowed to use backpacks (single or double strap) in the building.

BULLYING AND CYBERBULLYING

All forms of bullying – including cyberbullying - will not be tolerated.  All reports will be thoroughly investigated by the assistant principal and the principal.  Events of bullying will be documented, parents will be notified, and follow up will be determined on an individual basis.  It is the duty of ALL students, faculty, and staff to report bullying.  Remember if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

BUS REGULATIONS FOR STUDENT DISCIPLINE AND SAFETY

Students who live in Nashua, and who reside within the city-defined distance, have the privilege of using the city school buses.  Students should remember at all times that riding the bus is a PRIVILEGE AND NOT A RIGHT!  For the safety of all bus passengers and drivers and the reputation of family and school, the following regulations will be enforced.

            1.         All students are to be seated.

            2.         Leaving the bus prior to the student's destination is not allowed.

            3.         Smoking, eating, drinking, spitting, throwing things, yelling, using foul language, inappropriate behavior at bus stops or any similar actions are not permitted.

            4.         When bus windows are opened, arms, hands and heads are to be kept inside.  Nothing is to be thrown from or at the bus.

            5.         When entering or leaving the bus, courtesy is required.  Violations of these regulations will warrant action taken by the administration (in cooperation with the transportation director) who ultimately retains the right to suspend students from the bus.

            6.         Any vandalism will result in punitive action and payment of damages by student's family.

7.                  Any student not abiding with these rules will lose the privilege of riding the bus.

Note:  All reported incidents of bus violations by the director of transportation may result in an office detention, and any other necessary action as decided by the principal.

Bus Safety - Before-During & After School

Students are expected to be at their bus stop before the bus arrives.  Bus drivers have exacting schedules and will not wait for late arrivals.  Students are to stand a minimum of 10 feet back from the road as the school bus approaches.  Pushing toward the bus before it comes to a complete stop is extremely dangerous.  Any student who must cross the street to board the bus, or after exiting from the bus, shall cross the street in front of the bus at the direction of the bus driver.  Where appropriate, students should line up single file to pass in or out of the bus.  Any misconduct at the bus stop will be reported to the proper authorities and may result in loss of transportation privileges.

Temporary Bus Pass

The school secretary is allowed to write a temporary bus pass with a parent note stating the date and with whom the student will be traveling.  These must be in the office no later than the morning of the requested pass.

CELL PHONES

Students my bring cell phones to school, however, during school hours cell phones must be turned off and stored in lockers.  If a student needs to make a call he/she must get permission from the teacher and make the call in the foyer.  Cell phones may be used in café and extended day with permission.

DANCES

Dances are sponsored by student council and are normally held on Fridays from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.  Only Nashua Catholic students who are eligible are permitted to attend.  No student is allowed to leave the dance early without permission from the parent in writing or in person.  This is a school sponsored activity and all students will abide by the rules in the handbook including appropriate dress (see out of uniform).

DISCIPLINE POLICY

As a general premise, any conduct, inside or outside of school, that is detrimental to the reputation of Nashua Catholic may result in serious disciplinary action as determined by the Principal.

CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IS NOT A RECOGNIZED METHOD OF STUDENT DISCIPLINE.

School personnel may, however, use such legal and restraining force as is necessary to prevent harm to themselves or others.

Demerit System

The office reserves the right to detain students who have violated school rules.  Students who have been notified by the office that they must serve detention are given 24 hours to make arrangements for transportation.  Individual teachers may assign after school detentions which are separate from the formal office detention. Teachers will also allow students 24 hours in order to make arrangements for transportation and notification of parents. If a parent is contacted the same day of the assigned detention, and gives approval, then the detention may be served the same day.  The office secretary will verify with the parent his/her approval.  PARENTAL NOTIFICATION IS MANDATORY when keeping a student after school.

The Demerit System of discipline is one system of discipline being used at Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School. Three demerits will earn the student an office detentionMultiple Office Detentions will require a conference (phone or office) with parents to determine ineligibility, suspension or may result in the student being asked to withdraw from Nashua Catholic.

If a student has no demerits for one calendar month, any pending demerits will be considered closed and will not be applied toward future detentions.

When a student is cited for a more serious offence, his/her parents are notified by phone or mail.  A parent conference (office or phone) will take place explaining the incident(s).  At that time consequences will be established utilizing the guidelines of this handbook.  Consequences could include detentions, suspension or request to withdraw.

Dismissal/Expulsion

Dismissal/expulsions are enforced when a student violates school rules and regulations (as outlined in this handbook and the consequence state “expulsion/dismissal”).  Dismissal/expulsions are also enforced when a student indicates an inability or unwillingness to correct misbehavior or attitude (behavioral or educational) that, in the opinion of the school and school system, infringes upon the rights of his/her fellow students and interferes with their school progress.  Dismissal/expulsions will come with a recommendation from the principal and are subject to the approval by the NCRJHS Advisory School Board and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Note:  Any student under suspension/dismissal may not participate in any school activity or function until reinstated.  Any student who has been dismissed may not attend any school activity or function for the balance of the current school year.

Office Detentions

Office Detentions are usually served on Wednesdays and Fridays and are assigned by the Assistant Principal.  Failure to appear for an assigned detention without a parent phone call will result in an additional hour of detention.  Disruptive behavior in detention hall will result in suspension from school – the length of which will be determined by the Administration.

Out of School Suspension

When a student's behavior becomes a menace to the physical, spiritual or academic welfare and progress of other students, if there is a prolonged or open disregard for school authority, or the student has violated any of the specific sections of this handbook that includes suspension as a consequence for an action, the student may be suspended from school for up to 5 (five) school days through the authority of the principal.  Longer suspensions* require notification of the NCRJHS Consultative Board and the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools.

*Any student who has been charged by civil authorities with a violent crime may be suspended until the charges are resolved.  After the charges are resolved, the Superintendent, the NCRJHS Consultative Board, and Principal will review further action.

DISMISSALS

If a student must be dismissed early on a particular day, a parent should write a dated note asking for dismissal at a certain time.  The note must be given to the homeroom teacher at the start of the school day.  Students will be dismissed only to custodial parents/guardians unless the parent/guardian specifies another pickup person.  The parent/guardian or designated person must come into the office and sign the student out.  Identification may be requested at any time. The note should include the student's complete name when different from the parent/guardian.

Dismissal begins with announcements and is followed by a closing prayer. Bus students then report to the cafeteria, café students report to the gym and walkers and riders exit the building through the front foyer.  Drinks and snacks may NOT be purchased until all bus students have departed.  At 2:45 P.M., all students in the gym and out on Bartlett Avenue awaiting their rides will be sent to Café.   Students may not use personal music devices in the building.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY

NCRJHS does not support the use of illicit drugs or alcohol.  Any student found passing, consuming, possessing, buying, or selling controlled or dangerous substances in the school building, or on the school grounds, or at any time when the student is accountable to the school system for proper conduct, must be prepared to accept IMMEDIATE EXPULSION.  The principal acting "in loco parentis" has the legal right to search any student suspected of drugs or alcohol possession or use.  School administrators shall determine whether a person has sold, shared, ingested alcohol or a controlled drug or any chemical in any form such as "look-a-likes" or possession of any drug paraphernalia.  No one shall possess, ingest, share or give to another person any drug paraphernalia, beverage containing alcohol, a controlled drug, or "look-a-likes" nor be under the influence of alcohol or a controlled drug or any chemical in any form such as "look-a-likes" for non-medical purposes in the school building, on school grounds, or en route to or from school sponsored events or at school events.  Any person found to have violated this policy may be suspended for a minimum of 5 days and subject to further disciplinary action, which may include a review by the NCRJHS Advisory School Board.   With supportive data supplied from the school administrator, the NCRJHS Advisory School Board will determine whether to recommend that the person be dismissed from school for the remainder of the school year or take any other action deemed appropriate.  The Superintendent will make the final decision regarding expulsion or withdrawal.  Positive action will be taken in certain cases when the school administrators and/or the NCRJHS Advisory School Board feel it is necessary.  A person may be required to enroll in an approved program and/or treatment in the abuse of alcohol, drugs or chemical substances.  Proof of enrollment and periodic checks for continued participation in that program will be required if the person is to continue as a student after suspension.  Any violation of this policy may be reported to the local police and to the NCRJHS with the knowledge and approval of the principal.

EXTRA HELP

Our teachers make themselves available for extra help.  It is the student's responsibility to arrange an appropriate time with his/her teacher in order to obtain extra-help or guidance on projects or make-up work.  Any student doing 'D' or 'F' work needs extra help and should see the appropriate subject teacher.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips may be scheduled during the school year.  In all instances, parents must sign the approved school release form and indicate on the form if there are any medical problems that should be monitored while the student is participating in the program.  Nashua Catholic regards all field trips as an opportunity to enhance and enrich the educational experience of our students.  However, academic and/or behavioral issues may warrant excluding a student from participating in a field trip activity.  Administrative discretion will determine whether or not such a student will be allowed to participate.

FIGHTING

Fighting, wrestling, punching, excessive roughhousing or rowdy behavior will not be tolerated within the school building or on school grounds.  We are committed to the teachings of Jesus Christ and feel very strongly about physical and mental abuse.  If a student is being harassed by another student or students, or feels threatened, that student should report the incident to the nearest teacher or administrator immediately.  All contacts, whenever possible, will be treated in a confidential manner.  Fighting will result in a two or three-day suspension (depending on the circumstances) and parental notification.  A second offense will result in a five-day suspension and a parent conference.  Students and parents should be aware that fighting at any time, and depending upon the circumstances, might result in a NCRJHS Advisory School Board review followed by request to withdraw.  Final disposition regarding expulsion or withdrawal will be made by the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

The letters S, M, N, and U reflect effort and conduct grades.  The meanings of these letters are as follows.

                        S = Satisfactory

                        M= Meets Minimum Expectations

N = Needs improvement- Eligibility status in jeopardy

                        U = Unsatisfactory

Student grades are based upon several factors:

                        1. Objective and subjective evaluation by the instructor.

                        2. Test and quiz scores.

                        3. Short and long term papers, projects and assignments.

                        4. Homework.

                        5. Class participation and cooperation.

GUM, CANDY, FOOD OR DRINK

Chewing gum in school is not allowed.  Eating candy is not allowed except in the cafeteria at lunchtime.  (This includes breath mints, etc.) Food, drinks, and snacks are not allowed in classrooms before, during, or after school unless specifically authorized by the administration or teacher and only for special events.   Any of the above-mentioned infractions will result in detention.

HONOR CODE

Cheating

It is expected that all students will perform their responsibilities in an honorable fashion.  Cheating or unauthorized assistance on an exam, quiz, paper, project, homework, etc., will not be tolerated.  Any student who is found to be cheating or aiding another to copy will receive a grade of zero (0) on that assignment and his/her parents will be notified by the teacher involved.  An office detention will be assigned.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words or ideas without properly indicating the source.  Students are given specific instructions from their teachers as to the proper documentation of information for research papers and other assignments.  These instructions must be followed exactly to avoid plagiarism and penalties for cheating.

Forgery

Any student who uses or attempts to use a note, pass, warning notice, or other document containing a forged or altered item or signature of any authorizing person will be assigned to an office detention and parents will be notified at once.

HOMEWORK

Homework should be purposeful.  It should only require minimal instructional support on the part of the parent.  It should serve to reinforce good classroom teaching that has prepared the student to do the assignment.  Homework has many advantages.  Among them are the fostering of good home/school communications and training the pupil to plan his/her time well.  The homework assignments for an individual course should require an average of 20 minutes/assignment to complete.  Students should expect approximately 2 hours of homework per day, four days a week.  Typically, weekends are reserved for long range assignments, recreational reading, church and family life.  Homework also includes assigned reading and studying, not just written work.  Cooperation between the different teachers will keep in balance the amount of homework assigned.

HONOR ROLL

An honor roll will be published at the end of each quarter.  All subjects are counted toward honor roll standing as well as grades reflecting conduct and effort.  Two or more effort or conduct grades of N, or one effort or conduct grade of U will not be accepted for honor roll consideration.

Principal's List:  All A to A+ (93-100)

High Honors:     All A- to A+ (90-100)

Honors:              All B- to A+ (80-100)

INELIGIBILITY FOR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Allowing a student to participate in an activity without intervention when he/she is deficient in academic or behavioral areas compromises the standards of any academic program.  Ineligibility notices will be issued at Report Cards or if a student has attained Ineligibility status through the Discipline System.  Ineligibility begins five (5) days after reports cards are issued. Extracurricular activities include café, dances and all club activities except ski and art clubs.

Students who are ineligible due to grades or effort may attend Silent Study.  Students who are ineligible due to conduct must leave the school grounds at dismissal unless otherwise assigned to detention.

The following standards will be applied:

1.  A student becomes ineligible when he/she fails one subject in a marking period.

2.  A student also becomes ineligible when he/she receives one conduct or   effort exponent of U (Unsatisfactory).

These standards will be applied to the report card, and the ineligibility status remains in effect until the next report card unless the interim progress report meets eligibility standards or a student may appeal for eligibility by following the process stated below.

Ineligibility Appeal Process

An ineligible student may appeal once, during the academic year, for eligible status by informing the administration in writing.  At that time the student will be able to participate provisionally in extracurricular activities.  A plan for recovery - i.e., “Action Plan”- must follow within five schools days after report cards have been issued.  The Action Plan must include the steps that will be taken by the student to rectify the ineligible status and must be signed by both student and parents.  This Plan will be reviewed and the student will be notified of the outcome within two school days.  If the student is accepted to the program he/she will be able to continue to participate in all extracurricular activities which include but are not limited to: athletics, café, dances and clubs.  The progress report will determine status of eligibility.

ILLNESS OR INJURY DURING SCHOOL

A student who is too ill to remain in class must report to the office with a pass from the subject teacher.  Contact with parent or "other responsible person" (as designated on emergency permission form) must be made before dismissal due to illness.  All accidents occurring during school sponsored activities must be reported and the appropriate form shall be filled out. Under no circumstances should a student leave school without permission of the administration.  If a student must remain out of class for an extended period of time, arrangements must be made for parent or designated guardian to pick up the student from school.

IMMUNIZATION

All Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School students shall be immunized prior to school attendance according to the current recommendation of the State Board of Health Agency.  Any student may be exempted from the above immunization requirement if he/she presents evidence from his "licensed medical physician" stating that immunization will be detrimental to his/her health.  "THE NCRJHS CONSULTATIVE BOARD WILL ALLOW THE ‘SOLE EXEMPTION' FROM IMMUNIZATION FOR ALL CHILDREN, THAT WHICH IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE CHILD'S HEALTH."

Note:  Effective August 1, 1991, a second dose of measles vaccine will be required for all students prior to entry into the seventh grade.  The date of immunization must be submitted in writing to the school nurse for audit and recording.  Students also must have a TD Booster every ten years.

IMPROPER LANGUAGE

Vulgar language, sexual harassment, racial epithets, or derogatory remarks (oral or written), derogatory hand gestures which are intended to ridicule or demean fellow students or faculty members will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic office detention, suspension or request to withdraw depending upon the circumstances.

INSUBORDINATION

Insubordination by students will not be permitted.  Any student who is disrespectful, threatening, leaves class without permission, or overtly disputes the reasonable request of school personnel will be referred to the administration for disciplinary action and possible suspension or request to withdraw.

INSURANCE

NCRJHS provides accident insurance for all students for the school year while the student is in school or participating in a school activity.

INTERNET USE

Today, the Internet has made it possible for people to communicate globally.  Students are capable of gaining and sharing vast amounts of information.  The Internet makes it possible to research many libraries, universities, and databases for information related to the topics taught in their classrooms.  Using e-mail it is possible to communicate with scientists, authors, and other students around the world.

The Internet is vast and self-regulated.  There are materials that may not be appropriate for student viewing.  We have developed an Internet Use Policy with this in mind.

The filters we have in place cannot block all inappropriate materials.  With proper training and adherence to the policy most users will not be affected.  This is a general policy stating that all computers are to be used in an efficient, responsible, ethical, and legal manner.  The ultimate responsibility for setting standards will be on the parents or guardians.  The use of any computer in the building is a privilege and not a right.  Inappropriate use of the computer will result in restrictions or cancellation of privileges.

Appropriate Use

  1. Appropriate electronic mail communications – no IM (instant messaging)
  2. Information and news from CNN and other research institutions
  3. Public domain software and shareware downloaded by administrator only
  4. Discussion groups that relate to classroom topics
  5. Access to Library of Congress, university libraries, and other reference sites
  6. High school and scholarship information

NCRJHS deems the following as unacceptable (and strictly forbidden) uses that include but are not limited to:

  1. Breaking or misuse of computer equipment
  2. Spreading of computer viruses
  3. Plagiarism of the writings and ideas of others
  4. Violation of copyright laws or licensing agreements
  5. Using profanity, obscenity, degrading or other offensive language

            1.  The first time a student leaves the building without permission or cuts class, (including A.M. or P.M. homerooms) he/she will be called to the office and be given an automatic one day suspension for a cut class and a three day suspension for leaving the building.  PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY!

            2.  A second offense will result in a three-day suspension for the cut and 5- day suspension for leaving the school grounds without permission. PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY.

            3.  Any further violations may result in a recommendation for request to withdraw.

LOCKERS

Lockers are issued to all students.  Combinations are left with the Assistant Principal.  Lockers must be kept neat, clean and closed and locked at all times.  Books, bags, lunches, and projects may not be left on the floor, in front, or on top of the lockers.  Periodic inspections will take place in order to maintain this policy.  Lockers and desks are school property and simply “on loan” to students for the year.  Infractions will result in loss of locker privileges.

LOCKER ROOMS

Students are expected to respect the gym facility and all areas included with the gym.  Lockers and locker rooms are to be treated in good fashion.  Violation of this policy will result in loss of gym time and a reduction of physical education grade.  If necessary, parents will be notified of damage and will be expected to make restitution.

All written medical excuses are to be brought to the office by the student to whom the note applies.  It is mandatory that a student with a gym excuse inform the office and the physical education teacher concerning the exclusion.  After an injury, a student may not return to Physical Education classes until a physician's note has been presented to the office and Physical Education teacher, authorizing re-admittance to the class.

MEDICATION

1.       Any student who is required to take an oral medication, during the school day, as ordered by a licensed physician, will be assisted by a member of the school staff, so designated by the principal.

NEWSLETTERS

Newsletters containing specific information for parents about the life and activities of the school are issued through the principal’s office via email.  These are also accessible on our website, www.ncrjhs.org.  Please take time to read these bulletins.

NO SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The announcement of "no school" or "delayed openings" for all Nashua schools (public and private) will be given over television station, WMUR.  Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School follows the Nashua Public Schools for all cancellations.  A delayed opening means a 90-minute delay.  If we have an early release day and there is a 90-minute delay, we will have no school.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent-teacher conferences afford the opportunity to promote better communication between the school and home.  Although our system has only one formal parent conference time set aside in the Fall, any parent or guardian wishing to speak to one or more teachers can do so by arranging for an appointment.  The procedure is to contact the particular teacher or teachers involved FIRST.  Teacher emails can be found on the school website at www.ncrjhs.org. If a problem remains after this contact has been made, the department chairperson should then be consulted. (Chairs are listed in the front of this handbook under “Faculty”). The principal should be contacted as a last resort.  Students needing special help should make arrangements with the individual teacher.  PRINCIPAL, STAFF MEMBERS AND TEACHERS ARE NOT TO BE CALLED AT HOME UNLESS A SPECIFIC REQUEST IS MADE BY THE STAFF MEMBER.  Please do not request a staff member’s telephone number from the school.  The office staff is not allowed to give out that information.

PASSING PERIODS

Passing periods are 4 minutes in length. Students may visit their lockers as needed during any passing period.  Students must pass in a calm and orderly manner and keep to the right of the hallway or ramp.  The staircases are designated for up/down traffic.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

By law, students are required to take part in physical education classes.  Students must wear sneakers and the physical education uniform.  Sportsmanship and Christian spirit and sharing should prevail and reflect in our student's physical development.  At all times, administration has the final word on any gym or uniform violations.  Parents will be notified of any such actions.  Only a doctor or administrator can excuse a student from participating in gym classes.  Parental or doctor's notes must be filed with the school office and the principal and the Physical Education teacher must be notified.

Field trip or off-campus activity to the Greeley Park Playing Fields /

Activity Areas on appropriate Phys. Ed. days or for approved educational activities with various other classes are part of our usual regimen.  The Physical Education Instructor or Classroom Teacher will walk the students to and from Greeley Park.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are issued to all students in the middle of each marking period.  These progress reports must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the homeroom teacher within two school days.  Parents also have the option of returning a note stating they have reviewed the report and wish to keep it.  The progress report does not become part of a student’s permanent record.  It serves as a communication link between teachers and parents to identify potential roadblocks to academic and behavioral success in a timely fashion.  Students should use this information to stay on track for report cards.

Dates for Progress Reports

             1st Quarter -October 6, 2010                 3rd Quarter – March 7, 2011

             2nd Quarter - December 15, 2010         4th Quarter – May 13, 2011

Any type of material going through the air is considered a "projectile" and is absolutely forbidden.  Spitballs, airplanes, pencils, erasers, paper items, etc., are major distractions and can cause another student the loss of his/her sight.  A classroom or office detention will be assigned for infractions.  Students may be assigned an appropriate cleaning assignment to reinforce this rule.

PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Public displays of affection are considered inappropriate behavior and not allowed.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards are issued approximately every 9 weeks.  Parents will be notified when to pick up their child's report card.  The final report card will not be issued until all fees and fines have been paid.

PARENTS are expected to pick up report cards at the school office between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M.  The report cards may be released to a student who has a signed note from parents stating that they wish us to release the card to the student.  Phone calls will not allow the office personnel to release the cards.

SCHOOL HOURS

The official hours are 8:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.  Students must be seated in homeroom by 8:00 A.M. or they are tardy.  Detention for discipline may extend until 4:00 P.M.  A monitor is on duty in our cafeteria from 7:00 A.M.  until 5:30 P.M. The Business Office hours are from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Parents are to pick up their student from the cafeteria doors on Bartlett Avenue by 3:30 P.M.

SEARCHING STUDENT LOCKERS/DESK

Students "own" their lockers/desks against other students, but they do not have exclusive ownership against the school and its officials.  The school does not supply lockers/desks to students for illicit use.  School principals may, and should, search a student's locker on the basis of prior rights of the principal if and when the principal has evidence to suspect that the locker/desk contains illegal or harmful material.  If such material is found, it may be turned over to the police.  General search of all lockers/desks in reaction to a bomb threat, weapons, or widespread drug abuse can be justified as proper exercise of school authority.  Search of a student's locker/desk by the police may be made only with a valid warrant or in connection with a valid arrest.  Where police are involved, parents/guardians shall be notified immediately.  The principal or other school official shall be present as police make the search.  A third party shall be present as the school principal searches a student's locker/desk.  The principal need not secure a student's permission prior to searching that student's locker/desk.  However, such permission will assist in maintaining good student-principal relationships.

SIGN AND RETURNS

Students earning below a 70% on any graded assignment (D or F range) are required to obtain parent signature and return the signed assignment (or a note) to the subject teacher.

SMOKING

Smoking by students is strictly prohibited at any time in the school building and on school grounds. Smoking on buses is not permitted.  Students in violation of this policy are subject to suspension.

SPIRITUAL LIFE

Our primary reason for existence is for the spiritual and moral development of our students.  All students attending NCRJHS are required to participate in all liturgies, classroom prayer, retreats, and other aspects of spiritual life.  At all times parents are encouraged to participate with the school community.  The students may pray for any special intention requested.  We are aware and considerate of the diverse religious backgrounds of our students.  A community service project may be incorporated into the requirements for a religion class.  This is a Catholic School and students may not “pick and choose” what activity they will or will not participate in. Also, students are expected to stand and be respectful during the Morning Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

SPITTING OR OTHER INAPPROPRIATE MANNERS

Spitting on school grounds will result in an office detention.  Spitting on another student or student’s property will result in an automatic two-day suspension.  Poor or inappropriate manners as defined by conventional decencies will not be tolerated or accepted by the NC community.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Student activities may include: Destination Imagination, Band, Chorus, Drama Club, Theater Productions, Yearbook, Cheerleading, Intramural and Team Sports, Student Council, Ski Club, Math Counts, Prayer and Service Club, Newspaper, Writing Club, LEGO League, Debate Club and many more.  Other clubs exist and new clubs may be started if interest warrants.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Our Student Council is a vital part of the school.  Representatives are chosen from the student body.  Under the direction of a faculty advisor, the Student Council initiates and sponsors many of the activities and assists in the inter-relations of administration and student body.  No students are allowed to be part of this important group unless their conduct, grades and attitudes warrant this privilege.  Students must be eligible to remain on the Student Council.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE FORM

At times, teachers may feel that the final option they have left in regard to maintaining a positive learning environment is to remove a student from the classroom.  The teacher will ring the office to inform that the student is on his/her

way.  Upon arrival at the office, the student will check in with an administrator

and complete a Student Discipline Form.  The discipline form will be kept in the student’s file and parents will be notified as deemed necessary

TARDINESS

SchoolA student who reports to school after the homeroom bell has rung at 8:00 A.M. must obtain a tardy slip from the office.  This slip must be presented to the homeroom and/or classroom teacher before continuing on to class.

Class: Promptness to class is mandatory.  Unexcused tardiness will not be tolerated.  Students who are tardy to class or homeroom will be issued a demerit by the classroom teacher.

Note:  Bus students will be admitted to school and will not be marked tardy if the bus arrives late.

TELEPHONE

The office telephone is not available for student use except for emergencies.  There is a pay phone in the lobby for students to use.  We also ask that you do not make calls to the school to speak with your student unless there is an emergency.  Taking a student out of a class is detrimental to the learning process, disruptive to other students and usually creates stress for your student.  Obviously, if there is an emergency, please feel free to call.

TESTING PROGRAM

All students will take the TerraNova Assessment Tests annually.  Testing usually takes place in early Spring.

THEFT

Respect for the property of others is of utmost importance.  Stealing will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly. Students participating in this practice can expect to be suspended or expelled from Nashua Catholic.

TRANSPORTATION OF INJURED OR ILL STUDENTS

It is the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation for students sent home because of illness.  In case of no transportation, a duly authorized person may transport the student provided arrangements have been made with parents or a designated responsible person to care for the student upon arrival.

UNAUTHORIZED ADMITTANCE

Under no circumstances are students to admit outside personnel or visitors through any doorway.  The office must clear all visitors.

VANDALISM

Malicious or careless destruction of property will require making restitution and may result in punitive action by the administration.  Care of all school property, including books, desks, etc. as well as accidental damages due to carelessness or lack of student thought, are the responsibility of the students and their parents.  Parents of students are responsible (along with their student) for full restitution.  An itemized bill for damages will be sent to parents.  Intentional damage or destruction of school property will result in suspension or request to withdraw.

VISITORS

Students are not allowed to bring visitors to school unless the principal gives specific permission.  Parents or guardians are always welcome.  ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are an important part of Nashua Catholic.  Your willingness to share your time and talent is greatly appreciated.  Our school is committed to protecting God’s children by providing a safe environment for all minors who participate in school activities.  As part of that effort, all employees and volunteers who regularly work with minors must undergo screening and attend training.  Contact the safe environment coordinator at the school for more information.

WEAPONS

No student is to bring any article to school that is harmful or dangerous to the well-being of others or appears to be a weapon of any sort.  Such articles will be confiscated and taken to the administration. Disciplinary action will follow.  Any student possessing a weapon will be immediately expelled subject to the approval of the Superintendent of Catholic Schools.  The NCRJHS Advisory School Board and the local authorities will be notified as deemed necessary.

**RIGHT TO AMEND

Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School reserves the right to amend this handbook at any time. Notice of amendments will be sent to parents via email or the monthly school newsletter.

FINAL NOTE TO PARENTS

Throughout the school year, Nashua Catholic Regional Junior High School faculty and staff shall attempt to meet the needs of your sons/daughters in the true and prayerful spirit of Christ's love.  We offer the following prayer for your family:

O Dear Jesus, We humbly implore You to grant Your special graces to our family.  May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor and

faith.  We beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us.  Amen.

Over the years, we have learned that parents, students, and teachers prefer everything spelled out as clearly as possible.  This is what we have attempted to do in this book.  Please note that the handbook may be amended with proper notification to parents.  It should serve as a guide to students and parents.  Students should also be aware of the difference between the “letter of the law” and the “intent of the law”.  We also realize that incidents may occur that require a judgment call not outlined in this handbook and we would expect your support on administrative calls.  Please always keep in mind that we have your students’ best interests at heart.  We also truly believe that these rules re-state the Golden Rule - “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
