From the Principal:
Dear Parents
and Students,
Where did January go? Here we are into the
third quarter of the school year already.
Just a couple of reminders! February 15 is
President's Day - no school. February 17
marks the beginning of the Lenten Season -
the holiest time of year. We will be having
a special Ash Wednesday Mass on the 17th and
all parents, friends and relatives of our
students are invited to join us in
celebrating this special liturgy. Mass
begins at 9:00AM.
Again, I would like to remind parents and
students that the deadline for applying for
the Helen J. Horan Scholarship will soon be
upon us (i.e., March 15). Any student who
is interested in continuing their high
school education at any area Catholic High
School is invited to apply. Forms and
applications can be obtained online or at
the school. Please be advised that no
applications will be considered that do not
meet the March 15 deadline. See further
information (in this issue) below.
Peace,
Thomas
Kelleher, Principal |

Little Red Schoolhouse and Catholic Schools:

Catholic Schools Week Assembly for 7th Grade
on "The One-Room Schoolhouse in History and
the Evolution of the Catholic School in
America" was well received by the student
body.
This presentation emphasized the reasons
people fall in love with one-room
schoolhouses and work to preserve them for
our children to experience the past in
living history programs. Tracing their
humble beginnings and leading up to current
efforts at preservation, this program
highlighted why country schools are still
important to our history and how Catholic
schools were founded as alternatives.
The presentor, Susan Fineman, is a retired
public school history teacher and
administrator after working in the Lowell
Public Schools for 31 years. She currently
serves on the Board of Directors of the
Country School Association of America and
works in the District #1 Schoolhouse,
Nashua, NH as a living history docent. She
has presented various schoolhouse-related
programs in NH, Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa,
Illinois, and Texas. |

Academic News:
From the Theology Department:
This month, the faculty, staff, and
administration will be studying the cardinal
virtue of prudence. A prudent person is one
who does the good, as opposed to one who
merely knows the good. Yes, prudence
actually has three parts: good counsel, good
judgement, and command. When making a
decision one should seek good counsel. What
are the best alternatives for the good?
Discernment is critical. Good judgements
must be made between virtuous and vicious
actions. Lastly, command is acting as a
result of good counsel and judgement. As a
parent, are you practicing prudence in
decisions regarding your child? Are you a
model of prudence? As educators, prudence
helps one to refrain from making rash
decisions in matters of student discipline
and compels us to continually reflect on our
actions both inside and outside the
classroom and school building.This month,be
cognizant of the the cardinal virtue of
prudence. It can only make a positive change
in your life!
From the World Language Department:
On Tuesday, February 9 and Wednesday,
February 10, seventy Spanish students will
have the opportunity to travel to
Margaritas's Restaurant to experience a
presentation on Mexican culture and to enjoy
some authentic Mexican-style food. We look
forward to the upcoming field trip.
Ms. Brennan and Mr. Westwood
From the English Department :
During the third quarter, the 7th and 8th
graders will explore the literary elements
of plays and poetry. A variety of plays
will be read, along with a selection of
traditional and modern poetry. The 8th
grade honors literature class will begin
their exploration of the work of William
Shakespeare. The 7th and 8th grade English
students will continue their study of
vocabulary, grammar, usage, and mechanics,
will continue working on becoming more
skilled writers.
On January 21, 2010, during study hall, the
following 7th and 8th grade students
participated with great prowess in the
school-wide spelling bee: Michael Lang,
Megan McCoy, Jaime Negron, Mechan Schmitt,
Megna Senthilnathan, Udhay Vijay, Ted Allen,
Ben Chung, Nicolas Lang, Philip McDuffee,
Troy Nikander, and Anji Radakrishnan. Mrs.
Pinsonneault and Mrs. Maloney were very
impressed with their preparation and skilled
performance in this year's bee. Although
all these students did very well, Anji
Radakrishnan missed none of the difficult
words presented to her and will be our
school's representative to the Nashua
Regional Spelling Bee, for the second year
in a row. Meghan Schmitt, a worthy
competitor, won second place.
Congratulations to both of you.
From the Mathematics Department:
MATHCOUNTS
We're sending a HUGE thank you to all
students and parents involved in prepping
our Nashua Catholic MATHCOUNTS team/club
while preparing for the regional competition
this upcoming weekend in Bedford. Mr.Yemme,
Mr. Hebert and Mr. Radakrishnan have been
spearheading this endeavor and much learning
and laughter has been in evident in the
hallway outside their classroom. We all wish
the team members much luck in this weekend's
event and our thoughts and prayers go with
you all. Go NC!! Stay tuned for results in
the next newsletter.
CATHOLIC MATH LEAGUE
We're in the process of tabulating results
from the third test which was taken February
4, 2010. More details will follow in next
month's newsletter. It is exciting to watch
the students gather at
the classroom bulletin boards to discover
their placement within their class after
each test. They really do realize that it is
"cool" to do well in math and problem
solving is enjoyable! Nashua Catholic's
scores continue to impress us all. You may
watch our progress at
www.catholicmathleague.com.
The fourth and final test will be given in
early March.
