Dear Parents and Students,
November appears to be a very busy month at NC. Our 7th
graders have already been treated to an assembly on
bullying, self esteem and self confidence. The assembly
was presented by Mr. Bob Lamartina of Tokyo Joe's
Martial Arts Center. Mr. Lamartina, who has been to NC
before, presents an outstanding program that
successfully engages all students in a productive and
meaningful way. In addition, this month will also
include the beginning of our winter sports programs, new
students Open House, the Catholic Schools Entrance Exam,
and our Parent Conference Days on Nov. 20 and 21.
Parents are strongly urged to attend these conferences
as we hope to continue the strong partnership we have
with you to monitor your child's academic and social
progress and insure their success here at NC.
Student Spotlight:
This month's student spotlight belongs to Neil Sunil,
one of our 7th grade students. Neil is a member of the
Red Sox Kid Nation organization. In fact, Neil is the
captain from New Hampshire! The organization provides
fun and exciting opportunities regarding the Red Sox but
Red Sox Kid Nation is also all about kids helping other
kids. Neil is determined to collect 406 pieces of winter
attire for kids that are from low income and homeless
families. Our own Student Council will be helping Neil
achieve his goal (See Student Council News below).
Congratulations to Neil for putting into practice the
very values of caring for and helping others that are so
much a part of the Christ-centered education that we
impart to our students at NC.
News from the Science Department:
Eighth Grade Physical Science students are currently
working on collecting daily hurricane coordinates for
their Hurricane Project. The initial due date coincides
with Veteran's Day, a school holiday. The revised due
date is now November 7, 2008. Please mark your
calendars.
News from the English Department:
The 8th grade English classes have completed the process
of researching and constructing formal research papers,
and the 7th grade and 8th grade literature students have
concluded their exploration of nonfiction literature.
Mrs. Maloney's Advanced Literature classes have had a
busy month. They have just finished writing reports
about famous women and are now in the process of
presenting oral reports about these remarkable
individuals. Furthermore, the students are also
participating in Scholastic's Classrooms Care program.
They have pledged to read 100 books to help build
libraries for students in need. Once the goal is
reached, Scholastic will donate books to children in
Cibola County, New Mexico. This is a wonderful way for
the students at NCRJHS to help others who are not as
fortunate as they are.
Literature studies during the second quarter will focus
on short stories, mythology, fables, and folktales. The
8th grade literature classes will be reading "A
Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, and many other fine
examples of short fiction. The 7th grade literature
classes will be reading the short stories they will see
enacted when they go to Concord, NH, in December, along
with many other worthy examples of short fiction, both
modern and classical.
During the month of October, the teachers in the English
department administered a challenging spelling test to
all our students. The student in each class who spelled
most of these words correctly received a spelling
booklet and was invited to compete in the Nashua
Catholic spelling bee which will be held on January 22,
2009, during study hall, in Room 406. This competition
will be conducted by Mrs. Pinsonneault and Mrs. Maloney.
The winner of the school competition will be
representing Nashua Catholic at the Area Spelling Bee to
be held at the Elks Lodge, in Nashua, New Hampshire, at
1:00 P.M., on Sunday, March 8, 2009. This year's seventh
grade classroom winners were Ted Allen, Philip
Mansfield, Troy Nikander, Jake Noury, Anji Radakrishnan,
and Katherine Swallow. The year's 8th grade classroom
winners were Emma Brooks, Joey Campanella, John Dobens,
Alex Flinn, Jon McQuarrie, and David Swallow. We applaud
all the students who participated in this year's contest
and wish this year's competitors the best of luck.
Finally, if any student has a sincere interest in
writing and wishes to be part of a Writers Club, please
have them stop by Room 406 and let Mrs. Pinsonneault
know which after-school meeting day (other than
Thursdays) would be best for them. My hope this year is
to work with the club members to produce several
editions of a literary "newspaper."
News from the History Department:
the history dept has had a voter registration drive, and
almost all of the 7th and 8th grade students have
registered to vote. they will be voting in a mock
election on monday, nov 3rd. the trend has always been
that whomever the students vote for, so goes the state
of new hampshire. it will be interesting to see if this
trend continues. there will also be a second quarter
project that goes along with the election.
The second quarter will find the 8th grade students
switching from multiple choice tests to essay test, in
preparation for their high school years. while they
don't always like that in the beginning, they learn
quickly that essays are easier to explain than a stock
one sentence answer. they will also be "fighting" WWI
this quarter, learning why, even though they may not
want to go to war, in some cases, they may just have to.
Just before the holiday break, all students in the
school will be participating in the national geography
bee. we have always done well in the bee, and it's
always fun to see if the 8th grade trounces the 7th
grade, or vice versa.
The history dept hopes that all of our students and
their families have a wonderful turkey day, coming back
rested and refreshed.
News from the Mathematics Department:
Our students will once again have the opportunity to
compete in the Catholic Math League competition
(previously referred to as the Mathfax Contest) in all
of our Nashua Catholic math classes. Math competitions
are offered for each grade at a variety of levels. These
exams provide practice in solving word and logic
problems and are a good enhancement to our curriculum.
Historically many of our students have fared very well
on these exams and earn awards at the end of the year
from the Catholic Math League. There will be four tests
for each level containing 25 questions each. Each test
is thirty minutes long. Test dates are set for November
5, December 10, February 5 and March 4 for this year.
Looking forward to much success again as we embark on
this mathematical adventure!
Also, recently it has come to my attention that many of
our students still do not have their workbooks for math
classes. Since these books are "disposable" we do not
have any extras. Please check with your child to be sure
you have ordered the book and if not, check the varsity
website for your child's ISBN # and order the workbook(s)
ASAP. If we required the books, be sure we plan to use
them in class. Please help your child stay "on track" by
ensuring that they have all their supplies. Thanks!
News from Nashua Catholic Student Council:
Hello from Student Council! Over the next week and a
half we will be collecting winter coats, hats, gloves
and scarves for the "Cradles to Crayons" organization.
The "Cradles to Crayons" organization provides low
income and homeless children ages 0-12 everyday
essentials including clothing, books, shoes, baby
supplies and equipment, backpacks and toys. The name of
the particular drive that Nashua Catholic will
participate in is: "Warm up Winter!" The idea and
opportunity to host this drive comes to us from our
seventh grade student, Neil Sunil. Neil is a member of
the Red Sox Kid Nation organization. In fact, Neil is
the captain from New Hampshire! The organization
provides fun and exciting opportunities regarding the
Red Sox but more importantly, it is about kids helping
other kids. Neil is determined to collect 406 pieces of
winter attire for kids that are from low income and
homeless families. Student Council is happy and pleased
to help Neil and the Cradles to Crayons organization in
their efforts to keep kids warm this winter. Over the
next week please send in any new or gently worn winter
attire that we can add to the collection box! If you
have any questions please contact Miss. O'Brien at
mobrien@ncrjhs.org. Thank you in advance for your help.
Prayer and Service Club News:
When coming in to Parent/Teacher conferences in November
be sure to "notice" the beautiful Christmas Wreaths
being offered for sale by the Nashua Catholic Prayer and
Service Club. These wreaths make beautiful additions to
your holiday decorations and can be used both indoor and
outdoor. These artificial wreaths come in three
different styles and can be enjoyed for many years to
come. Please consider purchasing and supporting the work
done by our students in service to families in our
school and in our Nashua Catholic community. Wreaths
cost $25 each and must be ordered by November 24th for
pick up in the foyer of NC any time after Tuesday
December 2nd. In these uncertain economic times, we
expect that our club will have a very busy year! Thanks
in advance for your kind support of our efforts.
